Willie's thoughts

Manager Willie Randolph described the decision to place Pedro Martinez on the disabled list as a precaution. He also said he'd decide on a replacement in the rotation in a day or two.

Randolph has downplayed every injury suffered by a Met this season. Yesterday, he said he wasn't "concerned at all" by the calf strain Martinez suffered Monday. We'll see if that's still the case two weeks from now. "I think the main thing is that his arm feels great," Randolph said. "He'll be able to do his long toss and keep his arm strong. To me, it's more of a precaution than anything. I'm sure if we were in a different situation later in the season, I'm sure he could have gone out and pitched the way he has off and on the last couple of times out."
