Are The Brewers As Good As They Say They Are?

Now I know I’m being a little bit of a hypocrite with this thought, but I’m going to make my voice heard anyway.

Tomorrow the Mets start a three game series agenst the best team in baseball, the Brewers. The critics are saying this because they boast the best record (24-10). This may look like something that should intimidate other teams. It shouldn’t however look like this to the Mets.

The Brewers have faced, in their schedule, so far, all but one team that's under five hundred (the Dodgers). They’ve faced, in order, Dodgers, Cubs, Marlins, Cardinals, Reds, Pirates, Astros, Cubs, Astros, Cardinals, Pirates and the Nationals.

This looks like the Mets schedule from last year right now. Critics said that the Mets were facing easy teams and that when it came to crunch time, they wouldn’t be able to produce the same numbers. As we all know, they were.

Now I’m not selling the Brewers short, but instead asking, what did they do in the off season that was such an impact to force the brewers from a 75-87 record to where they are now?

Just about the biggest player they added was Jeff Suppan. He may be doing well this season so far (5-2 2.63ERA), but I just feel that this isn’t enough to put the Brewers at the level they’re at.

Before the Mets torrid run in 2006, they added Carlos Beltran (2005), Pedro Martinez (2005), Carlos Delgado (2006), Paul Lo Duca (2006), Billy Wagner (2006), Duaner Sanchez (2006), John Maine (2006); Jose Valentin (2006) and Endy Chavez (2006).

That right there justified the mets rise to power. I’m not seeing anything to that extent, or even remotely close from the Brewers.

All I’m really getting at is, don’t expect this upcoming series to be the clash of the titans that everyone’s making it out to be. It might be, but just think about it.
