Calling Mets Pond Scum???!!! Are The Cards Feeling Us Breathing Down Their Necks???

In his column today in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, writer Dan O'Neill, nicknamed "Hit & Run O'Neill," called the Mets "pond scum" as in "back in the 1980s, when the Cardinals and Mets were in the same division, it was easy to build a healthy hatred for the "pond scum." He adds "but it's still easy to work up a dislike for anyone and anything that comes from the self-absorbed Big Apple." O'Neill goes on to list reasons for hating the Mets, including not winning anything since trading Keith Hernandez in 1982, Carlos Beltran's performance in the play-offs in 2004, etc. While on one hand it's nice to know we can still tick people off, and this is better than someone being indifferent to us, someone needs to tell O'Neill to lighten up!!! Sheesh- it's not like we've been in any meaningful series with them recently...unless, as we wrote the other day, the Cardinals are recognizing that we are indeed the team to beat, and this is a critical series for both teams, even at this early juncture in the season. If this was the NFL, O'Neill's article would make for excellent "bulletin board material"...let's hope someone on the Mets caught wind of this column and decides to take it out on the Redbirds tonite...and I used to like the Cards, too...
